David R. Swinney, 68, of Overland, MO, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at his home. He was born June 3, 1942 in New Baden, son of James Jarvis and Eva (Shellhorse) Swinney. He is survived by a son, John (Dawn) Swinney of New Memphis; one daughter, Teresa Swinney of Blackwell, MO; two sisters, Louella Sarmiento and Patricia (Richard) Hicks, all of Belleville; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Greg) Holtman of New Baden; numerous nieces and nephews; his significant other, Donna McMenamy; and her children and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Margie Kueneke, Hazel Heinke, and Maxine Pruitt; a brother, James E. Swinney; and brothers-in-law, William Kueneke, Joe Sarmiento, Norman Heinke, and Joe Pruitt. Mr. Swinney was a life member of the VFW Post 3944 in Missouri. He retired in 2003 having worked for 37 years for Engineered Support System in St. Louis. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S Thor. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. All other services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice and will be received at the funeral home.
