John H. Schonhoff, 88, of Aviston, died Thursday, September 27, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland. He was born July 13, 1919 in Aviston, IL, son of Herman and Lena (Hanrath) Schonhoff. He is survived by a brother, Herman Schonhoff and wife Marcia of St. Louis, MO; a sister, Virginia Llewellyn of Chesterfield, MO; a nephew, Richard Philpot and a niece, Barbara Georges, both of St. Louis, MO. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clemens Schonhoff and Richard Schonhoff; two sisters, Marie Philpot and Antoinette Schonhoff; and brothers-in-law, Victor Llewellyn and Richard Philpot. Mr. Schonhoff was retired from the Alton Box Board in Highland where he was the plant manager. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII. He was a member of St. Francis Parish in Aviston and the American Legion Post 1239 in Aviston. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2007 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2007 and from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2007 at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made for masses or to the donor’s choice and will be received at the funeral home.
