Robert John Astroth, 91, of Breese, died Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at his home. He was born April 2, 1928 in Roxanna, the son of August Henry and Mary, nee Jaros, Astroth. He married Mary Jean Freiberg June 5, 1954 at St. Philips Church in E. St. Louis, IL and she preceded him in death on April 8, 1994.
He is survived by a daughter, Karen (Tony) Seely of Monee, IL; three sons, James (Karen) Astroth of Breese, IL, Dr. Robert (Denise) Astroth of Peotone, IL, and Michael (LaVerne) Astroth of Tampa, FL; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Patty Saale of Alton, IL; and a sister-in-law, Margie Astroth of Boca Raton, FL.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Kay Astroth; a sister, Margaret Schulz; his twin brother, Richard Astroth; and brothers, Liz Astroth and Joe Astroth; a sister-in-law, Jean Astroth; and two brothers-in-law, Alfred Schulz and Carl Saale.
Mr. Astroth was the superintendent of Central High School for 31 years where they also named the football field, Astroth Field, in his honor. He was a veteran of the United States Army and an avid golfer. Mr. Astroth was a member of St. Dominic Parish, the Breese Lions, the Moose Lodge in Belleville, and one of the founding fathers of the Breese Golf Course.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Breese with Rev. Chuck Tuttle officiating. Burial will follow at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 10, 2019 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at Nordike Funeral Home in Breese.
Memorials may be made to the Breese Lions, Central Paws, or the Breese Library and will be received at the funeral home.
