Marie L. Smothers

Marie L. Smothers, age 74, of Carlyle, passed away peacefully at her home on October 16, 2025. Born on November 16, 1950, in Breese, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of Eldred “Midge” and Monica (Peppenhorst) Halluin. On December 27, 1969, Marie was united in marriage to the love of her life, Larry Smothers, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Beckemeyer. Together, they shared 55 wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and family.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Larry, and their children: Jennifer (Marvin) Gerdes and Joseph (Stacey) Smothers. She was a loving and proud grandmother to Zachary Gerdes (Lourdes Rosado), Joshua Gerdes, Trey Gerdes (Isabelle Toeben), Kaylie (Brandon) Jansen, and Chase Smothers. Her legacy continues through her cherished great-grandchildren: Brooke Nordike, Jenessa Gerdes, Camila Gerdes, and Natalia Gerdes.

Marie is also survived by her siblings, Kathleen (Mark) Becker and James (Cindy) Halluin, as well as her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Robert (Chris) Smothers, Barbara (Tom) Grawe, Donna (Dennis) Ratermann, and Richard Smothers, along with many treasured nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldred “Midge” and Monica Halluin; her in-laws, Joseph and Iva “Cleo” (Webb) Smothers; and her sister-in-law, Jacqueline Thompson.

Marie retired from the federal government after a dedicated career at Scott Air Force Base, where she served as a managerial analyst. She took great pride in her work and the friendships she made throughout her years of service.

A vibrant and joyful spirit, Marie embraced life wholeheartedly. She loved golf cart, four-wheeler, and pontoon boat rides and was often found enjoying time with family and friends at clubhouse gatherings. Later in life, she developed a passion for bingo, never missing a chance to play. Above all, Marie treasured her family—rarely missing a ballgame, motocross race, or celebration. She was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s biggest supporter, and her presence will forever be felt at every gathering.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle. A celebration of Marie’s life will begin at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, with Rev. George Mauck officiating.
