Bernadine Kussatz, 87, of Albers, died Monday, May 25, 2015 at the Villas at St. James in Breese. She was born September 18, 1927 in Aviston, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Ottensmeier) Hellmann. She married Richard L. “Dick” Kussatz November 24, 1959 in Damiansville and he preceded her in death January 14, 1996. She is survived by two daughters, Ruth (Jim) Orschell of Trenton, and Rita (Carl) Niemeyer of Breese, grandchildren, Drew Niemeyer, Laura (fiancé, Luke Thompson) Niemeyer, Alison (Joshua) Pate, Brian Niemeyer, Patrick Niemeyer, and Logan and Emily Orschell; a great-grandson, Ryder Pate; a brother, Steve (Alice) Hellmann of Aviston, two sisters, Sister Magdalen Hellmann PHJC of East Chicago, IN., and Rita (Ralph) Heimann of Collinsville; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Vilene Kussatz of Woodlake, MN., Roger & Norma Kussatz of LaMoure, ND., Ruth Bengenston of Morris, MN., Anne Szopinski of Radom, Eileen Toennies of Albers, and Mary Holtz of Radom. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Genny Heimann; a brother, Cletus “Bud” Hellmann; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ed Heimann, Ernest Kussatz, Lloyd Kussatz, Lelan & Millie Kussatz, Earl & Minnie Kussatz, Leola & Earl Wevely, Kenny Kussatz, Don Bengenston, Don Kussatz, Sister Mary Clare Toennies, Helen & Joe Patke, Elmer & Margaret Kehrer, Frank Szopinski, Gerhard “Gett” Toennies, Elmer Toennies, Leo Holtz, and Lori & Art Kniepmann. Mrs. Kussatz was a dental assistant for Dr. G.L. Brefeld in Trenton. She was a member of St. Bernard Parish and Altar Sodality, the American Legion Post 1026 Auxiliary in Albers where she served as past treasurer, Daughters of Isabella Circle 718, a former CYO Moderator, and a St. Joseph Hospital Volunteer in Breese. Bernadine enjoyed sewing, quilting, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2015 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Albers with Rev. Jack Joyce officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Albers. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2015 and from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2015 at Hempen-Nordike Funeral Home in Albers. Memorials may be made to Mater Dei High School, Poor Handmades of Jesus Christ, or Clinton County Showcase and will be received at the funeral home.
