John Ellsworth Ruth, age 68, of Trenton, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 12, 1956, in Highland, Illinois, to Eldred and Ruby (nee Viere) Ruth. John married Carol Berberich on December 5, 1981, and she survives in Trenton.
He is survived by his children: Sarah Ruth of Belleville, Jacob (Natalie) Ruth of Lebanon, Kimberly Deters of Trenton, and James (Alexandria) Ruth of New Baden. His legacy also includes his beloved grandchildren: Penelope Walker, Charlotte, David, and Gideon Ruth, Zoey and Catherine Deters, and Henry Ruth. John is further survived by his sister, Louise (Dennis) Becker of Marine, along with many extended family members and friends who will remember him fondly.
John was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William "Mickey" Ruth; a nephew, Mark Becker; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bobby and Rosemary Berberich; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Berberich.
A lifelong farmer, John grew up near Troy, Illinois, where he was active as a member of 4-H and FFA, proudly showcasing registered Guernsey dairy cows at county, state, and national fairs. After marrying Carol, he shifted his focus to raising crops and nurturing his family. He was a man of deep faith, serving as a member of the New Baden United Methodist Church, where he participated on several committees.
John had a profound love for his family, often taking the time to share stories and create lasting memories. As a self-appointed family historian, he preserved numerous heirlooms, including cherished books, dishes, tractors, and farm equipment.
Visitation will be held at Nordike Funeral Home in New Baden on Friday, September 12, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and again on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 9 a.m. until the service.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Nordike Funeral Home, with Pastor Allen Williams officiating. Interment will follow at College Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
In honor of John’s memory, memorial contributions may be directed to the New Baden United Methodist Church or the St. Clair Extension and Education Foundation in support of 4-H programming, which can be made at the funeral home.
