Harold "Steve" S. Cheney, Sr., 74, of New Baden, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at his residence. He was born on August 9, 1951, in St. Louis, Mo, the son of John and Rosalie, nee Caraway, Cheney. He married Catherine Linkey August 12, 1988 at the New Baden First Baptist Church and she survives in New Baden.
In addition to his wife, Steve is survived by his children, Gerri Grayson, Roy (Theresa) Grayson, Ray Grayson, Sandy (Conan) Depuy, and Harold Cheney, Jr. He was a proud grandfather to Arthur (Brittany) Benfield, Anna (Zach) Missey, Emmie (Christian Fernandez) Grayson, Shane Grayson, Glenn Depuy, Katlyn (Mason) Benfield-Osborn, Megan Grayson, Melena Cheney, and Michalea Cheney. The love he shared will also be cherished by many great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
In addition to his immediate family, Steve is survived by his siblings, Gloria (Avelino) Cruz, Sharon Cunningham, and Gordon (Cathy) Cheney, along with his sister-in-law, Carol Cheney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Gerald Cheney and John Cheney, Jr., and his brother-in-law, Delbert Cunningham.
Steve retired from Turner Electric, where he was known for his dedication and craftsmanship. In his personal time, Steve enjoyed tinkering with small engines, a hobby that connected him with both creativity and mechanics. He also had a passion for playing Xbox and poker, often gathering with friends and family for fun-filled evenings. Additionally, Steve found joy in watching classic television shows, particularly "Gilligan's Island," a reminder of simpler times that made him smile. And anyone who knew Steve knew how much he loved WWE wrestling. He watched every match with genuine excitement—cheering, reacting, and getting completely caught up in the moment. Wrestling wasn’t just entertainment for him; it was something that brought him joy, energy, and a spark that those around him will never forget.
Visitation services will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Nordike Funeral Home in New Baden from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
Memorials made in memory of Steve may be made to the American Lung Association and will be received at the funeral home.
