Debra Ann Birks, lovingly known as Debbie, was born on May 4, 1960, in Pasadena, California. She passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, surrounded by her cherished husband, Brian Birks, and her beloved daughters, Jessica Hugo and Jennifer Brinkman.
Debbie was a remarkable stay-at-home mom whose greatest joy came from raising her two beloved daughters, Jessica and Jennifer. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to nurturing and guiding them, often sharing wise words that would echo throughout their lives, particularly her cherished mantra: “Kill them with kindness.” She approached life with an open heart and a generous spirit, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand to anyone who crossed her path. Her passion for creating a warm and loving home was evident, especially during the holiday season. Holidays were her ultimate favorite time of year; she eagerly embraced the opportunities to decorate for Thanksgiving and Christmas and took immense pride in hosting family gatherings. The kitchen was her sanctuary, a place where she found joy in feeding her loved ones and creating lasting memories.
Debbie's hobbies reflected her nurturing nature and creativity. She spent countless hours exploring new recipes, delighting in the art of cake decorating, even if baking was less appealing to her. Her green thumb brought beauty to her yard, as she lovingly adorned it with vibrant flowers. In her leisure moments, she could often be found crocheting while indulging in episodes of “The Golden Girls” and “Frasier.” She cherished her late-night conversations, or “just gabbing” as she lovingly called it, with her sisters Rhonda and Michelle.
Summers were particularly special for Debbie, as they were spent on the boat with her husband, Brian, creating precious memories while fishing together—a testament to their enduring bond and 44 year marriage. Throughout her life, her proudest accomplishments were undoubtedly her children and grandchildren. She rejoiced at the opportunity to watch them grow, relishing every moment spent with her grandson, Brody, and granddaughter, Ava, as well as her grandson, Jace and other loved ones.
Debbie is survived by her devoted husband, Brian Birks; her daughters, Jessica Hugo and Jennifer Brinkman; her son-in-law, J.R. Hugo and her son-in-law, Steven Brinkman; her grandchildren, Brody Brinkman, Ava Brinkman, and Jace Hugo; her brother-in-law and godfather, Devon Birks; her sister-in-law and godmother, Linda Birks; her sisters Rhonda & David Cumings & Michelle & Chris Perez; her step-brother Roy Cahill; her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The legacy of her kindness and love will live on in the hearts and lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
She now joins her beloved family members who preceded her in death: her father, Charles Cahill; her grandmother, Ruby Titzell; her father-in-law, Roy Birks; and her mother-in-law, Gladys Birks.
Debbie's warmth, kindness, and compassion will be profoundly missed. Her life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and countless cherished moments. Though she has departed from this earthly life, her spirit, and teachings will forever remain with us—a guiding light in our lives as we remember her with love.
A celebration of Debbie's life will be held at a later date.
