Charles Franklin Taylor, 87, of Damiansville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at St. Joseph Hospital in Breese. He was born on March 10, 1939, in Kennett, MO, the son of Lee Thomas and Hazel Agnes, nee McElyea, Taylor. He married Mary Hahn on December 4, 1959 at Memphis, Tennessee and she preceded him in death on February 3rd, 2013. Charles and Mary spent 53 years together until she passed away. Charles married Ruth Dirschuweit on August 30, 2014 and after a brief marriage they remained close friends and confidants.
Charles honorably served as a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, with notable time stationed in Germany. His military career was a defining chapter in his life, and he carried the values of discipline, honor, and service with him throughout his years. As a self-described “Military enthusiast”, Charles had an enduring passion for military history and culture. He particularly enjoyed watching war movies featuring Chuck Norris and Audie Murphy, reflecting his deep admiration for those who have served.
Beyond his military interests, Charles was known for his vibrant family gatherings. He cherished barbecues with his loved ones, creating lasting memories filled with warmth and camaraderie. His spirit of patriotism was evident to all who knew him, underpinning his faith and everyday interactions.
Charles is survived by his four daughters: Beverly (John) Latinette, Charlotte (Mitziu) Taylor-Echeverria, Rebecca (Dwayne) Pollardo, and Kimberly (Scott) Berchem. His legacy lives on through his numerous grandchildren—Timothy Compton, Catherine (Mike) Kinsman, Cody Latinette, Angel Kirkwood, Theresa (Chris) Kirkwood, Charlie (Crystal) Taylor, Kimberly (John) Golden, Lisa Gifford, Ronnie (SheQuon) Hansen, Kevin (Adrianna) Hansen, Kyle (Ivette) Hansen, Jamie Hansen, Kayleigh Berchem, and Summer Berchem—who each carry forward his memory. Additionally, Charles was blessed with great-grandchildren, including Mason, Evan, Gavin, Teagan, Mila, Levi, Jade, Chevy, Elizabeth, Natalie, Katelyn, Conley, Kherington, Adam, Alexis, Ammeri, Naomi, Micah, Hannah, Korra, Mavery, Zachary, Alexandria, Peyton, Maverick, Taylor, Amelia, Hazel, Noah, and Isiah. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Locke, as well as many nieces and nephews who remember him fondly.
Charles mourns the loss of his granddaughter, Rose M. Compton, and siblings Robert Taylor and Jerris Taylor, who predeceased him.
Throughout his life, Charles Taylor embodied the virtues of loyalty, faith, and resilience. His spiritual outlook offered guidance and comfort, both to himself and those around him. As a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Charles’s presence will be deeply missed but long remembered. His life’s story remains a testament to his unwavering commitment to family, country, and faith.
Charles was cared for by his oldest daughter, Beverly Latinette and her husband John Latinette during his last five years. This allowed him to spend his final years in the loving atmosphere of his family. Beverly provided medical and personal care for him with love and affection.
Graveside Services will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Monday May 11, 2026 at 2:30 pm with full military honors.
Memorials made in memory of Charles may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and will be received at Nordike Funeral Home, 15 E. Hanover St., New Baden, IL 62265 who is serving the family.
