Betty J. Colston of Carlyle died Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville at the age of 84 years. Betty was born March 2, 1930 in East St. Louis, IL
the daughter of Les and Goldie (nee Reed) Ponder. She married Robert “Ebbie” Colston on September 27, 1952 in East St. Louis and he preceded her in death on June 30, 1992.
Betty is survived by her children: Claudia Baker and husband Larry of Beckemeyer, Ebbie Colston and wife Robin of Highland, IL, Max Colston and wife Denise of Vincennes, IN and Frank Colston and wife Chris of Carlyle; eleven grandchildren: Cassie Baker, John Moss, Clara Colston, Frankie Colston, Max Colston, Aaron Colston, Derek Colston, Tricia Billhartz, Ebbie Colston, Lizzy Kavlock and Amber Herzog; and ten great grandchildren.
Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carlyle.
Mrs. Colston started her working career as a telephone operator in East St. Louis. She had worked at the Granite City Army Depot and Scott Air Force Base. She was primarily known for her friendly face at Ebbie’s Mini Mart in Beckemeyer where she loved to share her stories.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at the Frerker Funeral Home in Carlyle with Pastor Mark Goldman officiating. The interment will follow at Beckemeyer Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Frerker Funeral Home from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice.
