Margaret C. Mondt, 94, of Aviston, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at her home surrounded by family. She was born November 4, 1920 in Breese, the daughter of Louis and Bertha (Abeln) Vander Pluym. On April 15, 1942 she married Anthony “Tony” Mondt at St. Dominic Church in Breese and he preceded her in death on October 1, 1990. She is survived by four daughters, Sandy Hellman of Breese, Diane (Web) Tileston of Annandale, VA, Lois (Riccardo) Di Cola of Chicago, and Marcia (Alan) Stine of Breese; a son-in-law, Gary Weber of Bartelso; 11 grandchildren, Shane (Ranae) Hellman, Shannon (Billy) Klein, Stephanie (fiance, Kennard Blackwell) Tileston, Webster Tileston, Jamie Weber, Angie (fiance, Adam Tebbe) Weber, Troy (Myranda) Weber, Sofia Di Cola, Kim (Jason) Hegger, Chelsey (Terry) Pollmann, and Tyler Stine; two sisters, Helen DeFosset and Virginia (Mike) Berkel; and three brothers, Charles (Patricia) Vander Pluym, David Vander Pluym, and Tom Vander Pluym. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Weber; a son-in-law, Gordon Hellman; brothers and their spouses, Walter & Lillian Vander Pluym, Richard & Loretta Vander Pluym, Robert & Ardel Vander Pluym, James & Audrey Vander Pluym, and Jerome & Pauline Vander Pluym; and a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Vernon DeFosset, Mary Lou Vander Pluym, and Gertrude Vander Pluym. Margaret was a homemaker and a seamstress for Brefeld’s Draperies in Aviston and also altered clothing for many local residents over the years. She hand-quilted many beautiful quilts for family, friends and St. Francis Parish, where she was a member and served on the Altar Sodality. She was also a member of the American Legion Post 1239 Auxiliary, St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer for Linus Blankets of Southwestern Illinois in Belleville as well as King’s Closet of Lebanon. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2015 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2015 and from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2015 at Hempen-Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 2 p.m. and the Legion Auxiliary will have a walk thru at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Breast Cancer Research Fund, or American Cancer Society and will be received at the funeral home.
